Hand ranging Thought process
Hey guys, how have you been?
reebz, and joda what factors do you consider when assigning a hand range to a villain?
Right now this is what I consider when I put a villain on a range. (not in specific order)
1. Stack size
2. Type of Action
3. Type of Player
4. Notes (if any)
5. What Meta Level they may be
6. Bet size
7. Position
8. Players Behind(if it applies)
From there I put my villains hand range into the categories discussed get it in, post and/or steal.
So here is an example....
PokerStars - $2.28+$0.22|125/250 Ante 25 NL - Holdem - 8 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 4
MP: 1,290 (VPIP: 9.86, PFR: 11.11, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 71)
MP+1: 5,035 (VPIP: 15.38, PFR: 14.58, 3Bet Preflop: 5.00, Hands: 53)
CO: 1,675 (VPIP: 56.76, PFR: 11.76, 3Bet Preflop: 11.76, Hands: 37)
BTN: 2,698 (VPIP: 23.08, PFR: 27.27, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 13)
Hero (SB): 4,430
BB: 3,480 (VPIP: 10.53, PFR: 9.43, 3Bet Preflop: 11.76, Hands: 57)
UTG: 4,895 (VPIP: 20.00, PFR: 20.00, 3Bet Preflop: 0.00, Hands: 5)
UTG+1: 2,725 (VPIP: 5.56, PFR: 5.56, 3Bet Preflop: 6.67, Hands: 37)
8 players post ante of 25, Hero posts SB 125, BB posts BB 250
Pre Flop: (pot: 575) Hero has Q:diamond: A:spade:
fold, UTG+1 raises to 500, fold, fold, CO raises to 1,650 and is all-in, fold, [color=red]Hero
So given all the factors, this is how I assigned their ranges, and what their ranges may be.
UTG+1 Is a Decent reg so hes prob a meta level 2-3, so he thinking of what others are calling with. He's short stacked and is min raising from EP, so this leads me to believe that his range only consists of the top of his Get It hands, which in game play I assign him a range of JJ+,AQs+,AQo+
Next we have the 3Bet shover from the CO..
This player is very loose weak rec player, so I suspect his meta level is 1-2(way more 1 than 2) I have a note that he had 3 bet jammed deeper than this. The note 3b AI 25bb 86s<- i think he was thinking about their hand during this play, so its a bit different here, however this is also a good indicator of what his range here maybe. Since he's shorter here I think his range wont go all the way to 86s but it will consist of all aces, all broadways and PP's( here I think he's utilizing a level 1 thought process most of the time) so in game play I assign him a range of 22+,A2s+,KTs+,QTs+,JTs,A2o+,KTo+,QTo+,JTo
and next to consider the lone player behind...
hes a decent reg so I think if he is only going to be calling or shoving nutted hands here with all the action going on.
so thats my thought process so far. sorry if we have covered this before.

Re: Hand ranging Thought process
I won't comment to much on the structure you put forth of analyzing the players. It's good for you to sort of try to put it together yourself. I'd leave out the word meta though, maybe call it something else cause its gonna mess you up. I don't use meta game in 99% of my play at the 15's. Meta game is something i use very very few and far between, vs only the reggiest of regs that aren't playing so many table that they can still adjust vs my adjustments. So you don't want to be using that word at least, for the micros.
As for the ranges, you have the ep raiser folding aj and tt which is way too tight, also remember you have to add a little spew/bluff. not much as its a small range but I would add kq in at least as well.
the 2nd villain is pretty good but a little looser, unless we have a note this player will have some idea they have no fold equity (or if they dont' know the words fold equity they are straight looking at the value of there hand and shoving 'good hands) so there range won't include hands like jto. But again it doesn't need to be too tight because we should account for some spew.
Soon you'll start to understand tho that we are going to throw out these types of constructs and just learn to make decisions based on very simple logics that apply to all situations. It might sound crazy and against everything everyone says but BTP taught me it-how to click buttons.
good luck, looks like ill have my move sorted in a couple days and be grinding again by monday

Re: Hand ranging Thought process
I think the meta level is vital here to narrow their ranges. It makes sense to me at least to construct their range with this. As for another name, why would I call it anything other than what it is?!
it would great to here a simplified way of doing this! I have a feeling you have hinted at this before
but lets do the this then the notes review
thx
